With the rise of accessible sous vide machines it was only a matter of time before Starbucks hopped on the sous vide train with their egg bites.
There’s no doubt that Starbucks’ sous vide egg bites have proven a hit. They offer perfectly cooked, cheesy eggs with vegetarian options. In January Canadians got their first taste of the latest Starbucks sensation. True to form, our neighbors to the north are loving them.
But how do Starbucks’ egg bites stack up against the Sous Vide Guy’s recipes?
The first thing to note about our two previous egg bite recipes is that one uses canning jars and the other a cupcake pan. Between the two methods I’d recommend the second. It’s easier and the results are just as good. The only caveat is that you’re freezing your egg bites and cooking them later.
Regardless which egg bite recipe you choose, hands down the best part about making your own egg bites is customizing them.
You get to choose what goes into the egg or on top of it, whether green onion, breakfast sausage, or mushrooms. Varying cook time (see below) can give you moister egg bites, or firmer ones depending on what you prefer.
The recipes above give you 6-8 egg bites. These are perfect grab and go morning snacks which take as little as 30 seconds in a microwave to get piping hot.
Sous vide meal prep is nothing new. Adding this into your Sunday routine means you can skip the lines and get exactly what you want to boot.
Like a lot of chains, Starbucks’ main advantages are convenience and consistency.
Currently, Starbucks offers two sous vide egg bites. Both are wheat-free and made with cage-free eggs.
The first is Gruyere and Monterary Jack with applewood smoked bacon. This is the King’s Crown of Starbucks sous vide. It’s salty, savoury, and creamy.
Starbucks also offers a vegetarian sous vide egg bite.
Their egg white, roasted red-pepper and Spinach egg bite comes with Monterey Jack cheese. Where the Gruyere, Jack, and bacon egg bite is heavy and salty this egg bite is rich and creamy.
These egg bites are not only good on the go, but are also great for anyone on a diet. They tick boxes for gluten-free, low carb, paleo, keto, and vegetarian folk alike.
With that said, and I might be biased here, the sous vide guy egg bites eek out a win.
The great thing about do-it-yourself Sous Vide is the control. You can put in your favourite cheese, vegetables, or go full meat if that’s your thing. They can tick as many or as few of the boxes you want them to.
There is, however, one big diet issue with Starbucks’ egg bites.
They don’t have a vegan option. This is something that I might tackle in a future article.
As we’ve shown before, sous vide is an excellent way of cooking meat. But it’s also great for people with limited diets. Sous vide maximizes the nutrients in a meal and lets vegetables retain more vitamins.
So if you’re interested in fine tuning your food then Sous Vide Guy’s egg bites are the right fit for you.
